You knew all along!!!

Something really amazes me about most Nigerian employers. They know quite well they cannot maximize shareholders wealth all by themselves, hence they had to employ people to achieve this set objective. However, many of them fail to recognize the importance of staff welfare and satisfaction in achieving their own set targets. Well, i really do not blame them but the government (a discussion for another day).

Yoruba would say "Inu didun ni oun mu oriya wa" meaning, "encouragement breeds performance". A well motivated staff i believe would go to a reasonable length to satisfy his/her boss. Motivation is not just about the monthly remuneration one receives, it is all encompassing. A lot of Nigerian employers believe once you are been paid every other thing is less important. Meanwhile, those things considered as not too important pose a big threat to individual's performance at work. Example, tell me how you want a dedicated and outstanding staff who is not been encouraged either by promotion or some other spot incentives to remain a performer, it is impossible whether he is the pope or sheikh. Everyone needs a boost in life, even in radio link there are usually features for enhancing microwave link capacity. This is to say that everybody gets to a point where law of diminishing sets in, it is this motivation (monetary or non-monetary) that serves as the enhancing feature in human.

Why shouldn't i leave when i am not enjoying myself? This question is never too far from a frustrated and tired mind. A good or bad boss knows himself except if he fails to admit the fact. Take care of people and watch them take care of you. It is a law of cama. If an employee is under performing and he has never tried in any form to improve on his performance, i see no reason such staff should be kept despite his non-productivity. Perhaps no one would like to run his profit making venture as a charitable organization.

It is a fact that employers know the performing and non performing staff, yet the tend to take everything for granted. Here is what amazes me, why should an employer ask me " Why are you leaving? can we match what they are offering to keep you?". The first thing that comes to my mind when i hear such questions is "Oh! You knew all along!!!".

Employers should try and shift their attention towards employees welfare and satisfaction, this will go a very long way in retaining their good hands. If your employer fails to recognize your worth, hey for heaven sake, move on. After all, Time flies why not you?
